A woman was arrested Sunday morning after police say she drove into Lady Bird Lake in the early morning hours killing a passenger in her car.
Police have charged 25-year-old Madeline Rackley with intoxication manslaughter.
Two APD officers witnessed the crash and rescued the driver and a passenger.
Around 1:45 a.m. the officers were sitting in their patrol cars writing a report underneath the I-35 bridge when a car went into the water. Police are not sure what exactly caused the driver to slam into the Lady Bird Lake, but they say the car was traveling from Holly Street.
The officers got out of their car and rescued two women. When they found out there was another person in the car it was too late. The car, police say, quickly went under. APD's dive team responded and the car was pulled out. Inside they found the body of 25-year-old Jarrett Whittington.
The two women were taken to UMC Brackenridge.
"They just said they were sitting there typing a report and the vehicle came around the corner and lost control of the vehicle and went straight into the water," said Craig Smith, APD Sr. Police Officer.
