Ford Auditorium Demolition Delayed

Ford Auditorium Demolition Delayed

Posted:

(UPDATE: FOX 2's Roop Raj reports demolotion on Ford Auditorium has been delayed until next week as contractors continue to secure demolition permits.)

Detroit's Ford Auditorium was once home to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and was the site where Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior and Malcom X gave historic speeches.

However, it appears Ford Auditorium has reached the end on the road. Demolition is scheduled to start in a matter of hours, but you could call this a beginning.

"It's about time that it gets a facelift," said Kathie Hrnjak. "It will add more to the beauty of this city."

That facelift is already underway. Crews have started demolishing the interior of Cobo Arena. By 2014, Cobo Hall will be completely transformed and feature a 40,000 square foot ballroom with a panoramic view of the Detroit River. Other upgrades include more floor space, parking and the building will be more energy efficient.

It's all part of the plan to turn Detroit's riverfront into a true destination.
