Taking a Concealed Handgun Course

If you think owning a firearm makes you safer, one expert says, think again.  Even if you take a concealed handguns license course, that still may not be enough.

In all concealed handgun license courses, students learn about the laws, the dangers involved with a gun, and get to shoot at targets. All standard when taking a concealed handgun license, or CHL, course.

Steve Wolf says that's not enough.

"A lot of people believe the CHL class will help them prepare for the bad guys and that's simply not true. We've done some simple testing on the CHL card and it doesn't stop bullets, it doesn't stop knives, what makes you prepared is actually really good training."

Wolf is a firearm, munition, and explosive expert. He has taught CHL classes for 16 years. Unlike other classes, his course includes a tactical component -- and he just started teaching it in Central Texas.

"Training has to resemble the situation you are likely to be in. So qualifying 50 shots at different distances have nothing to do with training.," he said.

The training includes how to deal with multiple attackers, how to move and shoot at the same time, how to shoot and retreat, and what to do if the attacker isn't stopped.

Lorna Miller is taking the class to protect her family and for a better understanding of how guns work.

"I think we should all be trained if we're going to use a gun or be around a gun," she said.

Wolf says there are many misconceptions. -- buying a gun before taking a class is one of them.

"One of the misconceptions for women is that they think they need a 9 mm or a 38 but a larger gun like a 45 because he says they're more efficient and easier to shoot," he said.

"A lot of husbands think their wives need little guns that fire little bullets. Little bullets aren't going to stop bad guys for her than they would for him," Wolf said.

Hands on training to help you become a competent shooter with practical skills.

Wolf's course also offers something that no other concealed handguns course does, a warranty.

Wolf says as long as your concealed handguns license is maintained, they will back you up if you use a firearm in a justified use of deadly force for self defense or an innocent third party.
