Astronauts fix another failed computer on shuttle Atlantis

Posted:

The pilots on NASA's last space shuttle flight have fixed another failed computer.

Commander Christopher Ferguson and his co-pilot, Douglas Hurley, loaded new software into one of Atlantis' main computers Friday.

The computer unexpectedly went offline Thursday. The breakdown occurred an hour into the astronauts' sleep period. They were awakened by alarms.

Over the weekend, a different main computer failed. It, too, was restarted successfully.

These main computers are critical, especially for a shuttle's return to Earth. Atlantis and its crew are due back late next week.

President Barack Obama, meanwhile, will call the four shuttle fliers and six residents of the International Space Station on Friday afternoon.
