Man accused of violent attack at Detroit BP behind bars

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

A man accused of a violent attack in Detroit is in jail thanks to the help of FOX 2 viewers. Parts of the attack were captured by surveillance cameras.

"I hope justice is served," said Loretta Henry.

She can rest a little easier after the man accused of robbing and attacking her and her finance at a Detroit BP gas station on Plymouth Road is now in police custody.

"Just so happy and overwhelmed that they do have him, and I thank God that they do have him and he's off the street and he can't hurt anybody else," Henry said.

It started last Thursday night when Gerald Holloway went to pay for gas. A surveillance camera captured a man in a stripped shirt throwing the first punch. A fight broke out and they were forced to leave the gas station. The clerk locked them out, and then it got really ugly.

Cameras were not able to catch it, but five guys went after Holloway in the parking lot. They robbed him, punched him and kicked him to the ground.

Henry tried to break it up and claims the guy in the stripped shirt came after her, stole her money out of her pocket and still beat her repeatedly.

"He just started hitting me. He was hitting me and hitting me and I was hollering. I put my hands up over my eyes so he couldn't hit my eyes," Henry explained. "I thought I was going to die."

Pictures taken a week ago show Henry suffered bruises on her face and jaw. She had several teeth kicked out.

We aired the couple's story Wednesday night and the surveillance video outraged our viewers. Countless people called in tips identifying the man allegedly responsible -- 27-year-old Devoken Johnson.

Officers made their move early Thursday morning and arrested him at his house on Granville.

"If I saw someone on the news that I knew did something like that to somebody, I would've called too. So, I thank all the viewers that watch and the person, whoever, called in to let them know where the guy was," said Henry.

The 59-year-old grandmother also wants to thank the Detroit police because of their hard work, her nightmare has finally ended.

This is a really good example of what can happen when you put that stop snitching mentality aside.

Johnson has been in trouble with the law before and served time in prison. He is a probation absconder, but is now back behind bars and is expected to be arraigned in the next couple of days.
