(NewsCore) - Most Americans believe a mosque should not be built in close proximity to the site of the World Trade Center, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released Wednesday.
Two-thirds of those polled said the development, which is planned for a site two blocks from Ground Zero, was too close to the sensitive site.
The 13-story structure, which will also include a community center, has already drawn a number of opponents who say it is offensive to the victims and the families of the victims of the 2001 World Trade Center attack, and that the building itself would serve as a victory memorial to Islam.
Wednesday's poll found that, of those who oppose its construction, 82 percent said their opposition stems from its location, although 14 percent said they would oppose such a building anywhere in the country.
Forty-nine percent of those polled said they have generally unfavorable opinions of Islam, compared with 37 percent who said they have favorable ones.
The Washington Post reported that figure is the most negative split on the question since October 2001.
