(NewsCore) - Foodies should look away now.
Police in a remote region of Russia have seized 30 million rubles ($970,000) of red caviar from poachers -- and they plan to destroy it all, RIA Novosti reported Wednesday.
Russian law states that all contraband caviar must be destroyed to stop confiscated roe being sold on. And that means that 29.5 tons (55,000 lbs) of the pricey delicacy will have to be disposed of.
Police found it crammed into 1,340 plastic containers, all packed into an old fridge found in the street in Sobolevo, a town in the far eastern Kamchatka region, officials told the state-owned Russian news agency.
The most expensive varieties of caviar, which comes from wild sturgeon living in the Caspian sea, can fetch as much as $38,000 per kilo.
