Divers with the San Marcos Area Recovery Team recovered the body of Manuel Williams Monday from the San Antonio River.
Williams had been walking along the river bank with a woman in Foresville City Park on Sunday evening. Both Williams and the woman slipped on the steep muddy banks and fell into the river.
A strong current pushed them both down stream. The woman was able to climb up onto a log jam and call for help. She was rescued by other patrons in the park.
Williams was last seen struggling in the center of the river near the log jam.
Divers with S.M.A.R.T. were notified late Sunday evening and were on scene by 9:00 a.m. on Monday. They searched for about 25 minutes before locating the body of Williams in nine feet of water. He was tangled inside tree debris about 20 feet from where he was last seen.
S.M.A.R.T. is a division of the South Hays Fire Department and relies on grants and donations for funding. This is the fourth body divers have recovered from area lakes and rivers this summer.
