A kitten crisis has prompted the Austin Humane Society to offer its first ever free cat adoption event. On Saturday from noon to 7:00 p.m. at the Austin Humane Society, all cat adoption fees will be waived.

The shelter will be seeing a large influx of cats from other shelters in Central Texas. On Thursday and Friday about 70 kittens between the ages of two and four months will be transferred to the shelter. The cats are coming from the Williamson County Regional Shelter, Bulverde Area Humane Society, and the Woodville Humane Society.

In addition to those cats, the largest shipment will come from Town Lake Animal Shelter.

“Town Lake Animal Center has especially seen a very large influx of cats and kittens, 40% more when compared to this time last year,” said AHS Executive Director Frances Jonan. “In addition, TLAC has seen an increase in cat and kitten intake of 1,000 from March to June of this year, which may be one of the unintended consequences of the no-kill moratorium.”

The transfer of cats will put the AHS at 200% capacity. There will be approximately 150 cats and kittens available for adoption on Saturday.
