myFOXaustin(AUSTIN) - Soon cyclists could have a way to erase their traffic tickets from their riding record. Austin is now one of the first cities in the nation to offer defensive cycling courses to help eliminate tickets. It's similar to a defensive driving course. Some say it’s about educating cyclist through traffic.

Each month cyclist cover several miles wither it’s riding to work or just enjoying a ride around town. Some say they admit seeing fellow riders violating the law.

In 2009, the top three citations issued by Austin Police were running red lights, not having the proper lights and riding on the sidewalk, Wes Robinson, with Austin Cycling Association says it's all about educating cyclists especially since they usually don't know they are violating the law. However, ignorance to the law will not always get you out of a ticket but soon those who get a citation may be able to take a defensive cycling course to get out of paying those pricey fines.

“We thought it'd be neat to have, from an equity standpoint, for bicyclists to have the same options motorists have and motorcyclists. So if you get a ticket on a bicycle you can take it a safety course and learn a little bit about bicycle safety and have that ticket dismissed from your record," Robinson went on to say some bikers just don't know they can be the ones at fault.

Cyclists can sign up for the three hour course through the Austin Cycling Association website. After they completed it, their ticket will be dismissed. All they have to pay for is 25 dollars for the course and the court costs.

The first cycling course will be in July.
