Burnet Police Warn Of Telephone Scam

Burnet Police say several citizens have reported receiving a phone call late at night or early in the morning from someone claiming to be law enforcement.

The caller gives the name of a person that the citizen knows and then notifies them that the person has either broken down or been arrested and that they should wire money to assist their friend. The caller may also suggest giving them a credit card number and personal information, saying they will take care of their friend.

Police say it appears that the caller has somehow been able to obtain personal information on the citizen as the friend is always someone the citizen actually knows.

Burnet Police say they want to assure citizens that no police department or jail of any county will make this type of call.

They say if a citizen receives a phone call from a person stating they are an officer, they advise asking the caller for the phone number to the Officer’s office or dispatch, as well as for their badge number and full name.

Citizens who receive this type of scam or any other scam attempt are advised to call police.
