APD: Drink, Drive, Go to Jail

Austin, TX - Commander Stephen Baker of Austin Police Department stopped by Good Day to talk about Texas Department of Transportation's "Drink, Drive, Go to Jail" campaign and APD's no refusal weekend.

The no refusal weekend starts Saturday, Sept. 4 at 9 p.m. and lasts until 5 a.m. Sunday morning.

Some statistics:

  • In 2009, there were 4,087 driving while intoxicated arrests in Austin. So far in 2010, there have been 4,128 DWI arrests.
  • There were 44 traffic fatalities in 2009 and there have been 30 in 2010.
  • There have been 163 blood search warrants issued for DWIs since Halloween 2008.
    • Of the warrants issued, 91 percent tested about the legal limit
    • 72 percent tested twice the legal limit
