myFOXaustin - Austin police are cracking down on drunk boaters this weekend.
The "No Refusal" weekend began Friday and continues through Sunday. If police suspect anyone of driving drunk, they can order a blood sample.
"For the most part, especially when we've advertised a BWI initiative like this people will either have a designated driver or refrain from drinking, which is kind of our goal, " said Jeff Joseph, an Austin police officer.
Police are also checking on any possible noise violations.
"We will be having police officer in plain clothes in that area on boats where you might not even know who they are and when you hear that boat approaching, it will be too late," said Art Acevedo, Austin Police Chief.
Jerry Marzan, an Austin boater, says he's thankful police are working the waters the busy Labor Day weekend.
"It's great to be able to be checked like that and make sure we're following the rules," said Marzan.
Officer Joseph says there are three things the police department is urging boaters.
"Do three things, a unified message; if they avoid alcohol, control their speed and wear a life jacket, everybody should be in good shape," said Joseph.
Police are also reminding boaters personal watercraft, such as jet skis, are prohibited from Lake Austin over the Labor Day weekend.
