Elgin, TX - An Elgin High School Spanish teacher has been arrested for having an improper relationship with a student on campus.
Adrian Montanez, 28, was arrested by Elgin Police on Thursday night after an investigation into whether he had an improper relationship with a student at Elgin High School.
Montaznez has been with the Elgin School District for 2 years teaching Spanish and resigned from his position on Wednesday.
The Elgin School District has released the following statement in regards to Montanez arrest:
"On Tuesday, August 30th, The Elgin Independent School District received information regarding a possible inappropriate relationship between a high school teacher and a student. Acting upon this information, the district took immediate measures to investigate the situation. Subsequently, the school district placed the teacher on administrative leave and informed the Elgin Police Department of the allegations. The Police began an investigation of the matter, and Elgin ISD continues to work in cooperation with them. On September 1st, the teacher in question, Adrian Montanez, resigned from Elgin ISD. We take the safety and well-being of our students seriously. We have a responsibility to protect the identity and privacy of our students and appreciate everyone’s patience in that regard. Questions concerning the disposition of this matter should be directed to the Elgin Police Department."
Montanez is being held in Bastrop County Jail on $250-thousand dollar bond, but is awaiting transfer to Travis County Jail due to the school being located in Travis County.
Improper relationship between an educator and student is a 2nd degree felony and is punishable by any term of not more than 20 years or less than 2 years and may also include a fine not to exceed $10-thousand.
