Bastrop, TX - Bastrop Police Chief David Board has turned in his resignation and surrendered his position as chief immediately following his arrest for driving under the influence.
Board, who became chief of police in April of 2002, was arrested in Austin on August 17 for DWI. According to the arrest affidavit, Board was seen swerving in and out of lanes and making illegal turns in the 3500 block of Ed Bluestein Drive. Officers noticed a strong smell of alcohol and bloodshot eye.
Court records show that Board was previously arrested for DWI in 1984 before he became a police officer.
Bastrop has been assessing Board's position as Chief of Police since his arrest. Monday afternoon Board met with representatives of the city and submitted his resignation. The City Manager accepted his resignation and relinquished him from his duties.
According to a press release from the City of Bastrop, the city will keep Board on until November 1 in order to allow Board to receive his full vested retirement which would occur on October 31. The city says they weighed many factors including his 24 years of dedicated service to the Bastrop community. In return for his past dedication they will put him on leave from the city until November 1.
The City will begin efforts to fill the now vacant position of Chief of Police in the immediate future. At this time, the City Manager has appointed Assistant Chief Matt Wagner as acting Chief of Police.
