Not a single dog or cat has been euthanized at Town Lake Animal Shelter since last Thursday’s city council vote to make Austin a no kill city. Since then, the shelter has quickly approached capacity.
The Austin Human Society agreed to take in about 60 dogs and cats over the past two days. That number is about four times the number of transfers seen in a typical week.
In order to get the dogs into homes, both the shelter and the Humane Society are lowering adoption rates Wednesday and Thursday.
Pet owners will only have to pay $35 for a dog or cat over six months.
