Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott issued a warning for teens on Monday to avoid sending naked pictures of themselves to others via cell phones. The practice has come to be known as “sexting.”

Abbott delivered his warning at the main office for the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline which is located in Austin. The telephone line provides troubled teenagers with access to trained advocates who are ready to help 24 hours a day.

Abbott reminded teenagers that they should call the helpline if they are being pressured to take part in sexting. He pointed out that in addition to being a source of embarrassment later, possession of those photographs could lead to criminal charges. Possessing photos of an underage person is still considered child pornography.

Teens can reach the hotline by calling either 1-866-331-9474 or 1-866-331-8453.
