Caldwell County, TX (myFOXaustin.com) - Federal investigators are investigating a deadly plane crash in Caldwell County. Two people are dead including a young boy.

The victims were both aboard the plane. No one on the ground was hurt. The single engine plane crashed about 11:30am Monday in a field off County Road 177 and Highway 183.

The plane hit the ground so hard nothing is left of it except a debris field about 250 yards wide.

Witnesses wonder if foggy weather and poor visibility contributed to the accident.

The plane was a Piper, model P486 in route from Rockport, Texas to the Austin airport.

Airport officials say the pilot did not send a distress call.

Relatives have confirmed that the pilot was Ken Riley, a prominent oil and gas attorney. He was flying on the plane with his six-year-old grandson.
