The Lone Star Rail District has announced steps to move forward on a plan to have rail service from Austin to San Antonio.
Beginning in Early 2010, dozens of public meetings will be held along the I-35 corridor to study the environment impact of the rail system and explore the potential locations for up to 16 proposed stations from Georgetown to South San Antonio.
Money allocated by the Texas Legislature and federal funds would be used to make the rail possible. Union Pacific is looking at moving it's freight service to free up the tracks for passenger rail. The next step is for the Lone Star Rail District to secure federal approval for the project.
The 16 proposed stops would include stations in Georgetown, Round Rock, McNeil Junction, The Domain, Near Camp Mabry, Downtown Austin, Slaughter Lane, Buda/Kyle and San Marcos.
