(HAYS CO.)-- A lot of noise in Hays County coming from residents fed up with the Nutty Brown Cafe. They say the concerts there are so loud, they are turning to a state agency to call off all shows.
"I can have all the windows and doors closed, the A/C and the T.V. on to attempt to drown it out, and it still comes through. I can sit on the couch and feel the music come through," Mike Overton, a resident who lives near the venue, says.
In an effort to demand peace and quiet, about 30 residents in nearby communities like Heritage Oaks, Belterra and Ledgestone are protesting against the license the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission grants Nutty Brown Cafe.
"At this point, after several years of just asking the man to be polite to his neighbors it woulddn't bother me to see it shut down," Overton tells FOX 7.
"We do things like play at 80 decibels. Because we care about our role in the community, we do things like turn down several hundred-thousand dollars a year worth of business, because we won't do any rap shows, we don't do any hard rock shows. We don't do any shows Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday," Nutty Brown Cafe owner Mike Farr said.
"He's making an effort in doing things he doesn't have to do. According to the law," Hays Co. Commissioner Karen Ford said. She, too, lives near the venue.
Farr says the success of his venue brings good things to the community. A neighbor of the cafe himself, he tries to hear the concerns, but thinks shutting down Nutty Brown is ridiculous.
"There is no compromise they're satisfied with. When they shut us down, all those checks go away. All the community support goes away," Farr said.
"It's our last resort," Overton said.
Others argue, it's their only hope at sleeping soundly.
