FCC Commissioner to Speak at UT

FCC Commissioner Meredith Attwell Baker will speak Monday at the University of Texas, where she will receive briefings regarding the University’s innovative distance learning programs.

The programs include on-line high school; education for children of migrant workers; programs for Spanish-speaking youth; and college-level distance learning programs.

Commissioner Baker also will hear from students - both in person and outside of the state via video stream - about how the distance learning experience has impacted their lives.

She will speak Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Thomspon Conference Center, TCC 3.108. The center is located at 2405 Robert Dedman Drive.

The FCC is seeking input from the public in field hearings and site visits this fall as part of its development of a National Broadband Plan. Consumer outreach visits will include exploration of innovative and exceptional uses of broadband for the benefit of American consumers.

These uses include distance learning, telemedicine, economic development and a host of other beneficial applications.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 directed the FCC to submit a National Broadband Plan to Congress by February 17, 2010 that addresses broadband deployment, adoption, affordability, and the use of broadband to advance solutions to national priorities, including health care, education, energy, public safety, job creation, investment, and others.
