Heavy Rains Pound Wimberley

Heavy rain pounded the city of Wimberly early Wednesday morning causing several low water crossings to flood.

Hays County Sheriff's officials reported the bridge at CR1492 and River Road was flooded along with the one at Hidden Valley and Spoke Road.

A once dry Blanco river bed raged with water after heavy downpours drenched some areas with up to four inches of rain.

"It's much needed, and we really didn't even expect it," said Linda Busby who couldn't cross the 1492 bridge. "It's a super bonus. I think it's fabulous, and I wish it were happening everywhere that need the rain."

Wimberly has been under severe water restrictions for at least several weeks. Wednesday's water helped recharge parts of the Liberty Aquifer that supplies water to the area.

"We've just needed it desperately for sometime," said Busby.

But the rains barely put a dent for the drought conditions at the neighboring Edwards Aquifer.

"We need about 10 inches or rain," said Robin Gary. "We need a prolonged period of above average rain fall. Or we need a big storm."

Gary said the heavy rain missed the most important recharge zone at the Onion Creek watershed where water levels are about 50 feet below average.

"What we need is for the Onion Creek Watershed to receive a large amount of rain," said Gary.

"It's very important for our business," said the owner of 7A Resort in Wimberly, John White.

White said the full river has added a beauty unseen for months. He said the more the water continues to flow, the better it will be for his customers who pay money to stay at the near riverfront property.

Gary said as of Wednesday evening, the Onion Creek watershed received about two tenths of a foot of water with no discharge.
