The debate over President Barack Obama's healthcare reform plan spilled onto the south steps of the State Capitol Saturday afternoon.
Thousands of people from across Texas who don't support the president's plan rallied with signs as several guest speakers took the stage, one of which was "Joe the Plumber".
"Politicians like to keep us at each others throats," said Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, nicknamed "Joe the Plumber" by former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. "The extremists on either side is why nothing gets done. Politicians can go do what they want and us as Americans can't hold them accountable."
Wurzelbacher told FOX 7 News he doesn't support the public option plan. Instead, he said there needs to be tort reform and deregulation in the health insurance industry. Wurzelbacher was one of about half a dozen speakers paid to build-up resistance against Obama's plan. Their opponents, who were largely out numbered at Saturday's rally, said many people are misinformed about Obama's plan.
According to the bill, a government healthcare option would be available to citizens who are uninsured or underinsured. Those who wish to keep their current plan would be able to do so. The healthcare bill is still stuck in Congress. The debate in Washington may resume next week.
