The Department of Public Safety is urging people to be wary of scams being conducted by door-to-door salespeople. The agency has received numerous reports of unlicensed alarm installers going door to door and aggressively marketing their products.
"What we're seeing primarily are individuals who are unlicensed or unregistered who come in and make promises to either upgrade the alarm system or to replace the alarm system,” said Cpt. Renearl Bowie of the DPS. “A lot of times, individuals will enter into a contract or sign one and it turns out sometimes they don't get what they were promised."
Alarm salespeople must be registered with DPS and should be carrying a DPS private security pocket card. Officials say customers should not accept services from people who do not.
