Dripping Springs Fireworks Cancelled

People in Dripping Springs won't have a local fireworks show to attend this July Fourth weekend--it's been canceled.

"We're kinda sad because they have really big fireworks and it's really fun to watch them," nine-year-old Jesse Wikso told FOX 7 News.

The problem?  It costs too much.

"The last two years, it actually cost us real close to about twenty-grand," Wayne Burklund, treasurer of Dripping Springs Lions Club.

The Lions Club hosts the annual fireworks show at Sports Park, but this Fourth of July, they're calling the whole thing off.

"It takes a lot, a lot of money, and when you don't have the money, and when you don't have the shoppers to make up for it, and sponsorships, it just doesn't work," Donna Weekley said. She owns Lone Star Gifts, and is a Lions Club member herself. She admits sponsoring local events is becoming a challenge.

Other local business owners are feeling it, too. Once the donations fizzle, so do events, like the fireworks display.

"There's some local businesse that did help us, it's just harder and harder with the economy now, to get businesses to give that money," Burklund said.

One local family looks for alternate plans, but they quickly found out Drippings Springs isn't alone in shutting down their show.

"That's too bad, I wish we knew earlier, so we could've had some, you know, fundraising drive," Renita Coleman said.

If things don't look up next Independence Day, maybe the neighbors will join forces to light up the sky.

The Drippings Springs Lions Club is urging everyone to make the short drive down Highway 12, to Wimberley to see fireworks.
