Public Reacts to Grandmother Tasing

The Austin community is reacting to a Constable's deputy using a taser on a 72-year-old woman.   Some say the deputy should not had gone to such extreme lengths, other say the great grandmother from Granite Shoals had it coming.

"He had a decision to make. He was concerned for his own safety. It was either that, or take his chances with vehicles barrelling down the road at 60 mph," Sgt. Maj. Gary Griffin, from Travis County Pct. 3 Constable's Office, said.

Sgt. Maj. Griffin says the deputy deployed his taser to get control of the cursing woman who wouldn't comply when she was pulled over for speeding on May 11th.

At KLBJ News Radio 590, the phone lines were lighting up all day Tuesday.

"Man, I can't believe this whole story," one caller told show host Jeff Ward. "Was she threatening him or just using foul language?" a caller asked.

Ward says hundreds, maybe even thousands, of callers wanted to chime in on who's right and who's wrong.

"Jeff, I'm laughing hysterically," one caller said.

"Age is irrelevant," another said.

"Everyone gets a ticket, so everyone can relate in some capacity. Everyone probably has been furious at getting a ticket, so they can related in some capactiy. And the fact that it's a little old lady, it ramps up the emotional aspect," Ward says.

"I was tased here and here," 72-year-old Kathryn Winkfein showed FOX 7, before the dash cam video was released. Now her attorney forbids to speak out. But her story remains the same-- she shouldn't have been tasered.

"The one constant is, when people disagree the way it was handled, that most people are happy that it's out there," Ward told FOX 7.
