Bastrop County Animal Control seized 87 dogs from a home Thursday evening.
The dogs are all Schnauzers and were living in inhumane conditions according to a search warrant.
"I could see feces about two inches deep on the floor. There was no air conditioning on in the house. I could see dogs in the garage with no windows or doors open for air," wrote Animal Control Officer Sandy Perio.
The 87 dogs are all at the Bastrop County Animal Shelter now. Shelter staff say the dogs are in good health overall but show signs of neglect. Volunteers spent Friday bathing the dogs and treating them for fleas.
The shelter already had about 100 other dogs when the Schnauzers were seized. The shelter director says getting another 87 dogs all at once is straining their resources.
"We have more than we can care for right now and we're looking for foster homes to take on those that are ready to leave the shelter beacuse we don't want to euthanize them," said Shelter Director Betty Wade.
The Schnauzers are not available adoption or for foster homes because the case is still under investigation. The owner has not been charged with a crime yet. A hearing will be held June 12 to determine if the dogs are victims of animal cruelty.
The Bastrop County Shelter is in need of foster homes for the dogs they had prior to receiving the Schnauzers. They also need canned dog food.
