Austin, TX - On Wednesday night a Travis County jury sentenced convicted murderer Milton Gobert to death for the killing of Mel Cotton in 2003. Gobert was found guilty last week of killing Cotton and then stabbing her 5-year-old son.
The boy survived and was able to testify against Gobert.
His sentencing phase began Monday but defense lawyers wanted to do a background check on Tasha Lass, a Travis County corrections officer who allegedly had a relationship with Gobert.
When he took the stand, Gobert talked about how his mother used to beat him and that he didn't want to end up like his father, who he never met.
"I stayed away from women that would remind me of my mother and sometimes I would go out and try to pursue women that reminded me of my mother show that I could be successful and I guess trying to learn to love my mother," Gobert said.
