Fuel-efficient vehicles could be eligible for front row parking spots around the austin area soon.
David hamilton said he bought his honda civic hybrid for several reasons such as gas mileage and low emissions. He believes it is the responsible thing to do. As a result, he can receive a front row parking spot when he goes to class at austin community college.
Transportation is a big part of our sustainability effort," andy kim of austin community college said.
The school just kicked off its green car parking program. Students and employees driving fuel efficient vehicles can sign up to get a pass to park just steps away from acc's main buildings.
"The misconception out there is that green car, we often think it is hybrid vehicle," Kim said. "However green car was defined at ACC as low emissions vehicle, fuel efficiency and weight of the car is factored in."
As a result, not just hybrids qualify. Getting the required sticker is free. All drivers need is a parking permit which can cost as little as $15 a year.
The program will start with five spaces at each of ACC's seven campuses. School officials say they may add more in the future.
"With more applications we receive, we understand there are more green rated cars out there," said Kim. "So we'd like to expand this program as needed."
Other places around town, like Dell Children's Medical Center, have similar designated spots, giving those who drive green, a little recognition.
