The Environmental Protection Agency named Austin Independent School District as the top green-powered school in the nation. Round Rock ISD followed at number two and Pflugerville ISD at number 12.
According to a press release, this is the first time the EPA's Green Power Partnership has put out a nationwide list of schools using renewable energy.
The statement says the top schools are buying about 113 kilowatt hours of green power each year. That's the equivalent to carbon dioxide emissions produced by 11,000 American homes in one year.
The EPA's Web site shows that 39% of AISD's energy comes from green power. Biogas and wind energy are the two main alternative energy sources used by the district.
"Our green powered schools are giving kids a brighter future in more ways than one," said Lisa P. Jackson, EPA administrator. "They're leading the way in protecting our health and environment, and movie the country into the clean energy economy of the 21st century."
