TX Highways See Speed Limit Increases

Texas Drivers are going to start noticing cars driving a little faster in some areas of the start. On Thursday, the Texas Transportation Commission approved raising the speed limit to 75 miles-per-hour on portions of Texas highway.

About 1,500 miles of interstate, spanning 60 Texas counties, will see the higher speed limit. This change in speed limit marks the largest conversion since Bill 1353 passed last year. The bill allows the Texas Department of Transportation to establish 75 mph speed limits on state highways, as long as speed studies show the implementation can be done safely.

Areas along I-10, I-20, I-40 and I-45 are among the highways that will see the increased speed limit.

Since September, TxDOT has been reviewing existing 70 mph speed limits across the state to determine where 75 mph limit zones can be safely established.
