Cell Phones in School Zones Debated

It could soon be illegal to talk on your cell phone without a hands-free device while driving in a school zone.

House Bill 55 proposes the new law. State Representative Dan Branch said Monday several cities in his district have already passed ordinances to keep drivers from talking on their phones in school zones.

"It's real important to mobility in our state that we have a common approach to these sorts of laws," said Rep. Branch. "That's why the need for a state law."

The Eanes Independent School District isn't waiting for HB 55 to pass. The district has posted signs outside of each one of its schools asking parents to "Hand up before pick up."

"I can't see any reason why you wouldn't want to be as safe as possible," said Katherine Vandewater whose daughter attends West Ridge Middle School. "A lot of kids just don't think, and they'll dart right in front of you. If you're not paying attention someone could get hurt."

So far, those who don't follow the rule won't even get a slap on the wrist. The city of West Lake Hills hasn't passed an ordinance against talking on cell phones while driving in school zones. Critics of the bill say it will set a precedent that could spill over to a state-wide ban on all roads.

"There are times when I'm here waiting for my daughter and she's got a phone and the whole point to that is be able to contact me," said Erich Rose.

EISD has received little resistance to the voluntary cell phone free school zones.

HB 55 is still waiting for approval by the transportation committee. If approved, it will be heard by the house.
