Education Fair Breaks Language Barriers

Thousands of Spanish-speaking parents packed into the Tony Burger Center on Saturday to support their children's education at Feria Para Aprender. It's the largest Hispanic education fair in the region and it's meant to provide Spanish-speaking parents with the tools they need to help their kids succeed.

"If you've got a child that's being raised in the United States and maybe you as a parent were not raised in the US, you don't understand how to navigate the American culture, so being part of schools is a great way for them to learn as well," said Sylvia Acevedo, a co-founder of the Feria.

"I think that a little information is a lot of power and what we're doing is we're educating the parents on the benefits to their children of not just finishing high school, but going to college," said Police Chief Art Acevedo.

About 75 non-profit organizations, along with representatives from colleges and universities all over the state were on hand to give information and answer questions.

The message organizers are sending out is one we hear often: education is the key to success. They want these parents to know that language shouldn't stand in the way.

Organizers told FOX 7 that more than 7,000 people came out to the event today, and that they plan to hold a fair next year.
