Home Team Friday: Georgetown

Georgetown, TX - This week we're at Georgetown High School for Home Team Friday -- a 5A school with 200 teachers and more than 2,200 students.

Last year, a group of Georgetown High School students found out many of their classmates are homeless.

More than 150 kids don't have a normal place to sleep at night.

"They're kids that walk down the hall with us every day, that are sitting in the seat next to us," said Ryan Roe, senior. "It's really not fair that a 16 year old or 17 year old has to fend for themselves to get daily needs that our parents provide for us that they may not have."

So they got together and started collecting items for the Eagle Locker. It's a room where homeless students can discreetly pick up free items like clothing and toiletries.

"It's not ordinary, but that's something that Georgetown really strives on," said Roe.

They have regular collection drives.

Some students, like Sophomore Alex Adams, have gone the extra mile.

She went door-to-door asking for donations and ended up filling a SUV.

"It's not fair for students my age to, like, go around in school and not have the same stuff that I have," Alex said.

Other students in the group can relate on a personal level.

Roselyn Adams was never homeless, but years ago her family got by on a thin budget.

After talking with a teacher-organizer, she joined the group and produced a public service announcement about the "Eagle Locker".

Making a difference and keeping alive a Georgetown High tradition of changing things for the better.

"I wasn't homeless. I was never to that point, but close enough to where it hit me emotionally that I needed to do something that-- I'm at a point where I can help people now and that's what I need to do," Adams said.
