Round Rock, TX - It's Home Team Friday and we're bragging about a Central Texas High School, talking about their football team -- and other things that are not related to sports.
This week's school is named for the village of McNeil, which is named after George McNeil. He was a foreman for the Austin and Northwestern Railroad in the 1800s.
The Mavrick's band has been practicing since the end of July.
Now that school started, they'll rehearse at least 6 1/2 hours per week.
In recent weeks, they've been practicing 6 to 7 hours ever day -- working on music and leadership skills.
"In anything they do, whether they're going to become lawyers or doctors, dentists or whatever occupation, I think those skills -- good leadership skills, basically being a good person," said Travis Ancelet, band director. "Listening, being on your feet, being able to speak on your feet. I think all those skills help out down the line, definitely."
Did you know there's a cave under the orchestra room? It's called the "Hidden Forest Cave."
There are also two caves in the courtyard. One is a millipede cave and the other is the millipede cave annex.
These caves are home to a creature called the Bone Cave Harvestman. It's similar to a spider.
It has very toxic venom, but tiny fangs.
