Bookspring Increases Literacy in Austin

Austin, TX - Amy Clark-Meachum of Bookspring, stopped by Good Day to talk about the community's literacy needs.

Some statistics:

  • Most low-income families own two books: the Bible and the phone book
  • A middle class child enters 1st grade with about 1,000 hours of being able read to. However,  a low-income child enters first grade with only 25 hours of being read to.
  • Nearly 1/2 of the children from low-income families start school two years behind.
  • An American teen drops out of school every 26 seconds
  • 12 million students are expected to drop out of school over the next decade
