HAWKINS, Texas (AP) - An East Texas mayor says he was falsely arrested on an official oppression charge and just offered to help a resident get her yard cleaned up. Hawkins Mayor Will Rogers says he was responding to complaints from neighbors when he stopped by the home July 10th. An arrest affidavit says Rogers told the resident to clean up her yard or he'd ticket and fine her.
BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - Seven people have escaped from a burning Southeast Texas home in a fire that officials say appears to have been intentionally set. Beaumont Fire Rescue officials say nobody was hurt in the blaze early this morning. Authorities say the fire was started on the exterior of the house and spread to the attic by the time emergency responders arrived.
GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - Galveston Police say they've arrested 14 people on felony drug charges. A city police spokesman says the seven-month, multi-agency investigation resulted in 21 indictments. Arrest warrants have been issued for five Galveston men who weren't detained in a police sweep Tuesday night.
RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas (AP) - Officials in a Texas border city have repurposed a suspected drug and human trafficking path as a bike trail. The trail runs along the Rio Grande river less than a mile from the center of town. Rio Grande City Mayor Ruben Villarreal says the presence of more pedestrians along the path will encourage people doing illegal activities to look for other areas.
